Frequently asked questions.

how does the tech editing process work?
• You submit your pattern in Word or PDF format, along with any additional files, sizing standards, and photos. If your documents are in a different file format, please let me know.
• I will provide you with a cost estimate and return date based on the work required.
• Once I get the OK from you, I will send along an email summarizing our agreement, and I’ll get to work!
• Once I complete my first round of edits, I’ll send your pattern back so you can make any necessary adjustments. I will then do a secondary check to make sure nothing is missed, however, it is YOUR pattern and you decide what the final outcome will be. We can go back and forth as many times as needed until your pattern is perfect. I will then sign off on the corrected pattern.
• I will send an invoice that includes a payment window and instructions.
I AM JUST STARTING OUT. Can I AFFORD TECH EDITING?
Having your pattern tech edited is an investment that will benefit your business. If you want to develop a reputation for producing high quality patterns, and reduce the amount of time you spend on pattern support, you will need to account for the expense of having your patterns tech edited. Remember, the more work you put into polishing your pattern before sending it out for editing, the less work the tech editor will need to do, which keeps your costs lower.
DO I REALLY NEED A TECH EDITOR IF I HAVE TEST KNITTERS?
Testing is an invaluable part of the pattern design process, but it does not replace tech editing. Technical editing will produce a clear, concise, and correct pattern, and is usually done before any test knitting. Testing is generally done on a volunteer basis, and it is unfair to expect your testers to work with a pattern that may have multiple mistakes. Testing can not replace tech editing, and vice versa!
How long will it take to edit my pattern?
Turnaround time for the initial edit is approximately two weeks. After that, it is up to you to make the suggested changes and return the corrected pattern. I will then recheck the pattern and give any final recommendations. Please note that each pattern is unique, and some are more complicated than others. This may require more ‘back and forth’ communication, which leads to a longer completion time.
what if i need my pattern edited in a hurry?
If a rush job is required, please let me know upon initial contact. I offer a 72 hour turn around if the pattern is returned with reasonable time to complete a final check. Also, please note that I charge a small additional fee for time sensitive jobs.
how much will it cost to TECH edit my pattern?
All services I provide fall under the same pricing scale. My fee is $40 CAD per hour, with a one hour minimum, and charged in 15 minute increments thereafter.
Rush jobs (under 72 hours) are $45 CAD per hour with a one hour minimum, and charged in 15 minute increments thereafter.
Any questions, email exchanges, or revisions that take less than 15 minutes are not charged.
what format(s) should my pattern be in?
I am most comfortable editing patterns in Word or PDF format. If your documents are in another file format, please let me know, and I’ll tell you if it is something I can work with. I may also be able to advise you on how to change the file format.
how much will you change my pattern?
Make sure to keep your original pattern and send me a copy. I do not ‘rewrite’ your pattern but will make notes on (mark-up) the document, or send notes in a separate document for you to review. I also distinguish between notes that are mistakes (such as misspelled words or mathematical errors) and suggestions (which are areas that could be revised for clarity). You have full, creative control over your final pattern and do not have to implement any suggestions that you do not wish to take.
will you keep my documents confidential?
KnitProof is a highly professional tech editing service that values confidentiality and respects your intellectual property. I treat all files with strict confidentiality. Your patterns, charts, schematics, and other materials remain protected throughout editing.
how do i communicate with you?
My preferred form of communication is through email. I check it daily and respond promptly. In some cases, an idea is more easily explained verbally, so I may ask to send you a short video.
what do you need from me to edit my pattern?
I will need your pattern and any other sources you used or generated, so that I can reference them while editing. This includes sizing standards, charts, schematics, and style sheets, if applicable. I also find it useful to refer to photos of the item if available.
what form(s) of payment do you accept?
After signing off on the pattern, I will send you an invoice through Square which can be paid by credit.
can I combine tech editing with other services you offer?
Yes! I also offer style sheet creation tailored specifically to your brand, and schematics customized for your pattern. I offer these services separately, or they can be done in tandem with a tech editing job. Please note, each service is billed individually.
what are your credentials?
In addition to being an experienced, lifelong knitter, I have taken tech editing courses through both the Tech Editor Hub and The Knitters Guild Association (TKGA). I also have a degrees in Fine Arts and Education from the University of Victoria.
